EXPEDITION TO THE ALANTIKA MOUNTAINS

The Atlantika Mountains are an extension of the Cameroon line of volcanic mountains, spanning the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. They lie to the southeast of Yola in Nigeria and southwest of the Mandara mountains in Cameroon., they are part of the North region of Cameroon and are located north of the Adamawa Plateau of Cameroon Adamawa Plateau and west of the Faro National park in Cameroon.

The massif rises to about 1,300 meters (4,300 ft) above the Faro River, a tributary of the Benue River. The range includes a belt of volcanoes, The primitive Koma people. This people group, which today numbers about 49,000, retreated into the Atlantika Mountains in the last half of the 1800s in an attempt (apparently successful) to avoid paying taxes to the British colonial government.

They were thought to have died off until 1986 when a schoolteacher from India working for the government rediscovered this still-primitive person. famous for their traditional leaf-skirt dance, After playing, the musician rewards himself with a pipe. Hiking around the Nagaldu and Nagalpa villages of the Koma people, in the Atlantika mountains. Visit the Koma people and you will a lot to tell back home.

Below is a brief program description of this tour:

Day 1: Arrive at Douala or Yaoundé

Airport assistance and transfer to a city hotel; overnight.

Day 2: Fly to Garoua

Meet/greet by our local agent; visit the town and Mount Tengelen; overnight.

Day 3: Drive to Wangaï in the Alantika Mountains.

Visit the “vallée des rôniers” where the Koma people preserve the skulls of their ancestors and the sculptors of Mboulko. Overnight in tents erected in the local chief’s compound.

Day 4: Koma Villages

Climb up the mountains with porters to visit other Koma villages. Return to Wangaï and drive to Poli. Overnight.

Day 5: Maroua via Garoua

Drive to Maroua via Garoua. En route, visit the marbles of Bitzar and the gorges of Kola. Overnight in Maroua.

Day 6: Waza National Park

Drive to the Waza national park; visit the park and overnight at the lodge.

Day 7: Rhumsiki

Drive to Rhumsiki via Oudjilla, Koza and Mokolo; overnight at Rhumsiki lodge.

Day 8: Rhumsiki Village

Visit Rhumsiki village, especially the crab fortune teller and the village blacksmith. Afternoon drive to Maroua; overnight.

Day 9: Douala

Drive to Garoua in time to board a flight to Yaoundé or Douala. End of tour.
